"Bioclimatic" is a term that gets thrown around a lot in outdoor living, so it's worth being precise about what it actually means — and whether it's worth paying more for over a fixed-roof pergola.
What "bioclimatic" actually means
A bioclimatic pergola has a roof made from a series of aluminium louvres that rotate, rather than a single fixed panel. Adjusting the louvre angle changes how much sun, air and rain gets through — closed flat, they shed rain and block direct sun almost entirely; opened, they let light and airflow through while still providing some shade; fully open, they let the space function much like an open patio. The "bioclimatic" name comes from this ability to respond to the weather, rather than being locked into one fixed state.
How it differs from a standard pergola
A traditional fixed-roof pergola or gazebo gives you one static level of coverage — good in some conditions, less useful in others. A bioclimatic design gives you a working range: closed for a sudden downpour, cracked open on a warm evening to let heat escape, or fully open on a clear day. Our pergolas achieve this through a motorised louvred roof — most of our range adjusts through roughly 0–100°, and our top model opens further still, with an integrated drainage system built into the frame so rainwater is channelled away rather than pooling on the louvres.
Year-round use
This is really the practical argument for going bioclimatic: a covered outdoor space you can only use in good weather gets used a handful of weekends a year. One where you can adjust the roof to suit whatever the weather's doing gets used far more often — shelter from rain without losing the space entirely, shade from strong sun without shutting the garden off, and enough airflow through the louvres that it doesn't feel stuffy underneath even fully closed.
