If you're speccing full height plantation shutters for a tall window, you'll come across the term "mid rail" fairly quickly. It's a simple idea that causes a surprising amount of confusion — so here's what it actually is, and how to know if your window needs one.
What is a mid rail?
A mid rail is a horizontal bar that runs across a shutter panel, splitting it into two independently framed sections stacked on top of each other. Structurally, it does the same job a mid rail does in a traditional wooden shutter or window: it stiffens a tall panel so the louvres don't sag, twist, or rattle over time.
When do you need one?
The taller and heavier a shutter panel gets, the more it needs internal support. As a rough guide, our Classic range starts to need a mid rail once a panel gets past around 1.6 metres tall, and our other collections — Linea, Endurance, Signature and Heritage — carry a little further, to around 1.8 metres, before one becomes necessary. Go taller still, and a second mid rail comes into play. It isn't just about height for its own sake: a taller shutter is also a heavier one, and the mid rail is what keeps that weight properly supported across the frame rather than resting entirely on the hinges.
Does it change how the shutter looks?
A mid rail does add a visible horizontal line across the panel — there's no way around that physically. Most customers barely notice it once the shutters are fitted; it reads as a natural part of the panel's proportions rather than an interruption, especially once you've got louvres open and light moving through the slats. If you'd rather avoid the look altogether, going for a two-panel or tier-on-tier configuration is worth considering instead, since it changes where the horizontal break sits rather than removing it.
