HELP HUB — SELF-FITMENT

Filling Deep Gaps & Masking Edges Cleanly

If an uneven wall or a series of packers leaves a gap behind the frame that is too deep for decorators' caulk alone, standard caulk will often shrink or crack as it dries. Solve it with a two-layer method: hybrid polymer adhesive as a firm backing filler, then a final caulk finish.

Supply-only guide. Shutter Pros supplies made-to-measure shutters that you collect from us, then measure and fit yourself — we don't provide measuring, installation or fitting services. This guide supports your own DIY fitting. Pre-sales questions? Call 0114 463 0090.

The 6-step filling and masking method

  1. Test the surface first. Test tape adhesion on a small, hidden area first to ensure it does not lift paint or leave a sticky residue when removed from your frame or wall.
  2. Apply protective masking. Apply a strip of flexible PVC electrical tape or low-tack painter's tape exactly along the edge of the shutter frame to protect its factory finish.
  3. Fill the void. Inject the hybrid polymer adhesive deep into the void behind the frame to create a solid, stable base.
  4. Smooth and channel. Smooth the adhesive down flat with a wiping tool or a damp finger so it sits just below the front edge, leaving a small, neat channel.
  5. Remove the tape. Remove the masking tape while the adhesive is still workable to maintain a clean edge and prevent it from skinning over or binding to the tape.
  6. Final caulk finish. Once the solid base adhesive layer is entirely dry, apply a final, thin cosmetic layer of flexible decorators' caulk over the top. This fills the small remaining channel perfectly and creates a smooth, flush finish that is ready for matching wall paint without any sinking or cracking.
Professional tip: when pulling away the masking tape, pull it slowly at a 45-degree angle away from the frame edge. This shears the wet adhesive cleanly and leaves a sharp line.
