Sash window measuring steps
Traditional sash windows feature a horizontal wooden rail where the upper and lower windows slide past each other. For the best visual look, measure the distance from the sill to the centre of this rail so your shutter can be manufactured with a matching horizontal mid-rail.
Also verify that your frame fixings will anchor into solid wood or masonry, avoiding the hollow side pockets where sash weights sit.
French door measuring steps
Because doors open fully, shutters are generally face-mounted directly onto the moving door frame rather than inside the wall recess, depending on the configuration selected at the time of ordering. This allows the shutters to open with the door.
Measure exactly how far your door handles rotate. You must choose a frame layout that provides enough depth for the door handle to operate completely without striking the shutter louvres.
