Choosing the Right Fixings for Your Wall
A stable shutter installation relies on anchoring your frame fixings directly into the solid structure of your property. Plaster is simply a cosmetic surface layer and cannot support the weight of the shutter over time — take your time to check the wall type before drilling.

Wall types and how to fix into them

| Solid red brick or concrete | Select fixings suitable for the wall construction. Drive heavy-duty expanding wall plugs cleanly through the plaster layer so they seat entirely within the solid brick fabric. Use countersunk screws that finish flush with the frame. |
| Lightweight thermal block | Standard plugs can strip softer thermal blocks. Select high-grip or wide-flange plugs engineered for aerated concrete blocks to distribute the load evenly without crumbling the substrate. |
| Dense engineering brick | Requires a high-quality carbide masonry bit running at lower drill speeds to prevent overheating. Secure with high-tensile wall screws for a firm anchor. |
| Timber studs or framework | Screws should drive directly into the centre of the wooden studs. Plugs are not required, but drilling a small pilot hole prevents the timber frame from splitting. |
| Dot-and-dab cavity plasterboard | This wall style features plasterboard sheets attached to brickwork with adhesive dabs, leaving a hollow gap. Use long-reach frame fixings that span the gap and anchor deeply into the brick behind, preventing the plasterboard from flexing. |
| Fixing into steel or hard substrates | Located directly above many window reveals. If you encounter a steel supporting lintel that is too thick or hard to comfortably drill a pilot hole for screws, clean the surface thoroughly and apply a continuous bead of high-quality hybrid polymer adhesive along the top of the shutter frame. This will secure the top track flush against the lintel as a supplementary bonding aid where mechanical fixing alone cannot achieve full contact, while mechanical screws handle the primary structural weight on the left, right, and bottom tracks. |
